Discimus ut serviamus. – We learn so that we may serve. That is what you’ll see once entering QC campus through its main gates located on Kissena Blvd. in Flushing, New York. We learn so that we may serve.
I didn’t know about this until I was in my sophomore year. Yes, you can say that I did not pay much attention to my school and I’d say that was true. But the reason for my little background and general knowledge of Queens College was being a part-time student from my first semester at QC. In fact I was a part-time student all the way until my junior year.
But there was no way I could spend years at Queens College and not know about its meaningful motto. So at some point, I don’t know exactly when, I did notice QC motto and right there I loved it. I knew that this motto completely did apply to me. Often mottoes are there just so that the institution could have a motto. But in my opinion Queens College’s motto serves a true purpose. In just 3 Latin words it’ll tell you that the middle-class students of Queens College who are mostly residents of the City of New York and its suburbs are those who are looking to serve their communities by learning. That motto is something to be proud of.
Every once in a while when I get extremely tired of studying, when I’m under a lot of stress during the midterms and the final week, I get a sense of tranquility and peace in me once I think of QC’s motto.
