The first few days of training, Melynda gave us the description of what “duty” would consist. You must wear your black Summit polo shirt with your QC id while you are on duty. On weekday duties you will have to be in the office from 5pm to 8pm dealing with office work such as resident’s mails and vacuum rentals. On weekends you will have to do 24 hours shifts. During duty hours, if there are any concerns with maintenance, you must describe the incident in the work order on the Summit website. If there are any incidents that were involved with violence, alcohol, or illegal substances, they will be referred to the judicial system of Queens College directed by Emanuel Avila. He will decide what to do with the residents.
We were also given a guide to set and host programs. The RA’s have to propose a program and then publicize the program after it is approved. After the program, we must evaluate if the program was successful.
Another piece of paper that the RAs received was an example of the guess pass sleepover application. Each resident is supposed to give this application to each of their roommates and suitemates and get their approvals for their guest to sleepover. Then the host will sign the application.
As we were visiting different departments in QC, I met VP Dr. Joe Bertolino. He played a game called True Colors with us. All my colors were close to each other but the most dominant color was blue. Blue are affectionate people who like to communicate with others 1 on 1. They like to avoid trouble when possible and show love.
Meeting with different departments in QC is important for every RA so that you can give residents the proper instructions to find help. We met with the Help Desk and also the health department located on the 3rd floor of Frese Hall. The health department gave each RA condoms to give to the rest of the residents and also protocols to follow if any students are sick.
Before our training ended, we were trained on how to mediate with roommate issues and incidents. We spent a whole day on scenarios that would occur. We also picked our schedule for duty before the semester started.
Although the Legend RAs had the luxury of staying in a hotel, we had a disadvantage because the Summit was not complete. The night before the opening on August 26th, 2009, we had nearly no sleep. We just moved in the day before and had to wait for the paint to dry so that we can hang up the door tags. Most of the RAs had to stay up to 3am finishing door tags and vacuuming. Residents started to move in around 8am but we had to meet by 6am. That night I had only 3 hours of sleep. All RAs have to be available during move-in days.
