Despite the fact that I posted an article on the first day of Spring 2010 (Spring 2010 Is Here) about how I plan to be on top of things, start the semester with the intention of not falling behind, and not to procrastinate; apparently the snow is planning to ruin my spring 2010. Really, what’s up with all that snow? I know I shouldn’t complain. Remember global warming? Yes. Then don’t complain and be happy that the recent snowstorms have been record breaking, and may be taken as a sign that our Earth is safe.
My complaint is not in regards to the amount of snow, or the trouble of shoveling. It was nice that we had a day off that one Wednesday when school was closed due to the snow, but in reality it messed up our classes so much that we’re still suffering from falling behind. Most of my professors are too ethical to let go of that day that was missed, and so as a courtesy want to schedule and extra session to make up for the day that was missed. In any event, unlike my other fellow students, when it snows I’m NOT impatiently waiting to see the “Classes are Canceled. College is closed.” message on QC’s website. My reasoning is very simple, every time school is closed due to the snow, we have one day less for the same amount of material that had to be covered throughout the semester. As a result professors do one of the followings:
- Compress the materials to be taught into the remaining sessions. Under this condition the professors have less time to teach materials thoroughly and it is usally done with a rush to get to the other materials.
- Neglet certain part(s) of the Syllabus. In this case the professors get rid of a part of the course that is less important. As a result students do NOT learn everything they were supposed to learn. Remember we PAY for our courses so we should get the most out of it.
- This method which causes a lot of negative reactions is obviously scheduling an extra session on a Saturday, during the free hour, or any other possible time to make up for the time that was lost.
My ideal method is to go through my semester as it is planned in my printed schedule, and as it was planned by the Registrars Office! I don’t like surprises, I don’t like compressed sessions, I don’t like missed-materials, and definitely don’t like to sit through the class during the free hour on a sunny day in April because of the snow in February.
With all that been said, yes, let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! But PLEASE don’t snow so much that school gets closed. It is very inconvenient, and it just creates confusion all the way till the finals week.
