Freedom.
That is the word I associate with college. It’s true, though. I’ve never felt so free, so able to be myself.
I had been told that the freedom in college would hit me hard, and it’s completely true.
It’s the small things that mean the most to me- being able to sit out on the quad with friends in between classes, writing in my journal by the water fountain outside the library (even though those annoying lizards scare the heck out of me), or just sitting and staring at the NYC skyline. It’s the fact that we are left to our own devices and trusted that makes me love college.
I had been extremely nervous before I started classes, not knowing what to expect. But after the first day, I just did NOT want to go home (This may or may not have something to do with the fact that I still live with my parents).
Students in college are treated as adults, because that’s what we are. It’s nice not being treated as an annoying teenager for once. I’ve always been a bit mature for my age, so I love how the professors and staff and fellow students treat us like equals. It’s invigorating.
That is exactly why I feel like Queens College is my home. I never really felt like I belonged in high school, and after the first day of classes at QC I felt perfectly at ease.
Overall, I’m totally in love with college and I hope the next four years go by really, really slow.
