The trap is a necessary evil. When a person moves to New York City to pursue a career in the entertainment business, they usually end up in the restaurant business at some time. Taking a job at a restaurant is necessary for the short-term bills and for the high cost of living. But the hidden fees are the time-consuming nights, temptation to go party with co-workers, and mental distraction from the dream. A person has to stay strongly convinced that at sometime he/she will get his/her big break all the while balancing work shifts and a job that isn’t directly related to the entertainment business. The person may get a small gig here and there but then it’s back to the restaurant, while building his/her career on the side. It takes meticulous planning, faith and belief in oneself, and enough introspection to see if his/her actions are truly getting the results that can get his/her entertainment career to be the sole bread-winner. Good luck to all those who choose this lonely road, and here’s to hoping you don’t get caught in the trap of being a career waiter when your dreams and aspirations are for fulfillment in the arts. That’s all I have for now, bedtime at 8:15 a.m. from the night before. Peace
