Rate Your Professor, Not Trash Your Professor

The title of this post clearly says what I want to say. Yes, this is about rating your professors on RateMyProfessor.com, the very popular website which many students use it as a decisive factor in taking a class with a professor or not. I cannot lie, I have checked it out too. It would be wrong to say that it is not a helpful website. I find it helpful but I do not ever under in circumstances base my decision on the ratings.

While checking the ratings on professors may give us some vague information as to what type of a professor he/she may be. It can never be accurate because all the ratings and reviews are subjective and not objective. They are people’s opinion, and history has shown that basing your decision on people’s opinion will not always bear the best results. Liking or not liking professors has to do with personal preferences and choices. Just because I love one professor and say so many good things about him, it doesn’t mean that he is really the best professor. It just implies that my personality matches his method of teaching therefore I most likely earned an A+ in his class and now I am writing good reviews about him.

Most of the times negative reviews for professors are posted by people who did not receive their desired grade in that specific class. Then they feel angry about that professor and in return leave the nastiest reviews for him/her on ratemyprofessor.com. And in my opinion those reviews are the worst review. Generally speaking negative reviews don’t have any true basis unless the are backed by solid support as to why they think that professor is not recommended.

It is true that not all professors are the best. Frankly speaking we all know that Queens College like many other colleges have horrible professors, terrific professors and everything in between. That’s just the nature of things and there is no problem with it.

How good or bad the professor is, one should not use ratemyprofessors.com or other commentary platforms to trash professor(s). It is important to understand that blaming your bad grade on your professor will not change the fact that you received a bad grade. If you really feel that you did not deserve the grade that you got, Queens College has its ways of grade dispute. Lastly and more importantly, professors could care less for the most part what students are writing about them. At the end of the day it matters that they are hired by CUNY, and they are teaching at Queens College and that they will continue to teach.

Do yourself and everyone else a favor, either don’t put any reviews for professors or if you are try to just describe the professor and his teaching method. Do not trash him, because it doesn’t help at all.
