Sports are weird but wonderful

Start off by a cool shot to win a game by clicking-do it now!

The World’s most amazing Basketball Shot! What is it about sports that captivates the nation? Playing sports makes some sense. There’s the friendly competitiveness, the social aspects of it…but watching someone hit a ball with a stick for four hours? See someone put a basket in the hoop from far away. Who really gives a darn?

I think it’s the same thing as when we follow a television show every day. We get emotionally connected to the character(‘s) on television and we feel like we’re a part of what happens. Watching a game somehow makes you feel connected to the team/players and thus the interest. I remember that feeling as a kid that if I listened to the game and prayed that my team would get a hit and they did it was because of me listening :) . We feel a part of the game despite being thousands of miles away. It’s kind of fascinating and thought provoking if you think about it!

I read an article in sports illustrated recently about what amazing things sports have done in the world. Transcending cultures and curing diseases- the two examples I remember are they now have basketball clinics in Israel for Palestinians and Jews and although in the beginning there is a lot of hesitation and skepticism of each other when they are on the same team they become friends and it becomes ‘Haifa versus Tel Aviv’ as opposed to Israeli versus Palestinians. That totally blew me away. The other example was aids in Africa has actually decreased it’s rampant spread due to sports. Kids playing soccer are taught about aids and the dangers of being sexually active with people who aren’t tested and how to get tested themselves. The power of sports is incredible. I will add to this post when I’m more awake. Crying babies all night and I am right now sleepwriting if that’s possible.

Also, the new feature of the Lee Harbor blog- 1) word of the week-this week’s word is ERUDITE, as in Lee harbor expresses himself in an erudite and clear manner since he’s such a genius. 2) This week’s must read- The man who mistook his wife for a hat by Oliver Sacks. The most inspiring and wacky book that I’ve ever read (and I’ve read a lot of books b/c to reiterate to those who may have forgotten- I am a genius). It’s really incredible how the mind can function….well read the book, I’m not giving it away.
