Music Major: The Unknown Species 2011-10-02 23:42:07

Even holiday weekends provide little to no rest for my weary, musical soul.

My boyfriend texted me today, asking how I would spell the word “tonicization.” I informed him that he correctly spelled it himself. See, he’s taking Music History 2 and 3 with Professor Henry Burnett. At the music school, Burnett is a name that strikes fear in the hearts of many a student. But those who have actually endured the rigors of his class realize that he is quite possibly one the most generously musical men to live, but I digress…

Tonicization(n.) the emphasis of a new key through the use of chords from that key.

I didn’t actually expect any of you to make sense of that. Bear with me.

The reason my boyfriend asked me how to spell tonicization was because every time he typed it into his word processor, it underlines it as incorrect. This was something I already knew, as I’ve discovered this penomena before. But my boyfriend shed a new light on it. He sighed and said, “Not only do people not acknowledge us musicians, but now even technology ignores us.”

And then I promised him I’d blog about it.

Always,
Nicholle B.
