Degradation of Women in this Society

No matter where you are in the world, women are constantly being objectified. Even though here, in America, women are supposedly to be seen as “equal” to their male counterparts, it is nowhere near true. In other countries that are less developed, the situation is even worse. What qualifies as the perfect woman? Why does this scene force people to think of a 5’10 model weighing in to be less than 110 pounds with perfect skin and hair? Why is she always ready to conquer the world, yet not allowed to perform masculine duties as simple as changing a tire or understanding sports? Why is it acceptable for women to wear men’s clothes, yet seen as blasphemy when a man chooses to dress as a women? Why are women constantly looked down upon, when they are just as powerful and capable as men?

Today’s society is one of the major culprits in this situation. When a new magazine comes out, young girls run to see what today’s idol is wearing, what she looks like, and how they can become more like her. They slather their faces with make-up, covering their innocence. They burn their hair to make sure that not a single strand comes apart- messing up their superstar look. Then, they set out to the world, knowing that their appearance will be judged constantly.

In America, women are paid approximately 30% less than their male counterparts, and the ratio just becomes more and more uneven as the development of the country we are speaking of decreases. Why, for the doing of the same job, are women being treated unfairly? It can be claimed that the reason for this is that women take maternity leave, but in this day and age, fathers are staying home to watch their children just as frequently. So why is “paternity leave” understandable, yet “maternity leave” causes women to lose 30% or more of their paycheck?

In 2011, Fox’s hit show Glee did an episode focusing on the degradation of women. From the need of revealing outfits to get their points across, to the point that men don’t wear their types of clothes, loved character Will Schuster showed that women are looked down upon in this day and age.  Miley Cyrus seems to find the need to solely use her body in order to highlight her true talents, and therefore make money. Along with doing this, she is signaling to hundreds of thousands of young girls that it is okay to use your body to get what you want. She seems to be telling people that you should have a pencil thin body to highlight who you are, and then you should flaunt it.

So next time you see a woman being belittled, remember that this is just 2013. What is going to happen with the rise of more superstars like Miley, and the close eye of future generations on them?
