What Is Wrong With The Knicks!?

I cannot believe it has gotten to this point. I watch games hoping they pull off an upset. While nobody expected them to be the Miami Heat or Indiana Pacers, we never expected them to be the Milwaukee Bucks. It has gotten that bad.

With no first round pick, this losing season is totally useless.

Carmelo Anthony will become a Free Agent after the season.

Whether Anthony stays or leaves, the Knicks will be over the salary cap.

This sounds really bad doesn’t it?

Well I wish I was setting you up in order to refute the statement, but I am not. This is really bad. However, there are small glimpses of hope.

The main thing that can save the Knicks is Carmelo Anthony staying. With Carmelo Anthony remaining a Knick, you can at least be entertained next year, but it will likely be another garbage season. What Melo staying does is provide a bright outlook into 2015.

In 2015 the contracts of Amare Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler come off the books. Almost every Knick will be coming off the books for 2015. If Melo stays, the chances of one, or maybe even two, high quality stars joining him in New York becomes very high. The Knicks will be able to afford one major superstar to join Melo, and depending on what kind of deal the Knicks would give him after this season, they may even be able to afford two major superstars to join him. Regardless, the Knicks will have the money to put whatever talent they want around Melo is 2015.

There is your bright spot, 2015. If Melo leaves, you still have to look to 2015, but next season will be horrible, and the chances of a superstar wanting to join the Knicks will be slim with them having nobody on the roster. In my opinion, you need Melo to recruit players in 2015.

Now, what is going on with this season!?!? How have things gotten this bad!

I think you have to look no further than the point guard position. I hate to jump on the “blame Felton” bandwagon, but he really has been horrible. When you have an elite scorer like Carmelo Anthony, I believe that a pass-first point guard is a necessity. You need a point guard that is going to fly up and down the court, penetrating to the basket, and using that to swing the ball to open players. Felton just hasn’t been able to do this. The ball movement is stagnant. Everything relies on Carmelo Anthony.

Where Felton, and the rest of the point guards, have really killed the Knicks is on the defensive side of the ball. They just do not know how to keep point guards from getting to the basket. It is an endless cycle of garbage defense. The opposing point guard flies by the Knicks’ point guard, forcing a switch on defense. Then you just keep passing the ball, and eventually someone has to be open. Every team knows this. No matter who the opponent, every team is doing this and scoring at will.

Here is an example of how bad the Knick defense is. Watch point guard Pablo Prigioni see the screen being set. He reacts by running to guard someone else, for a reason I will never understand, leaving center Andrea Bargnani completely confused as to who to defend, leaving Brooklyn Net point guard Deron Williams completely open for the three pointer. What makes this specific play even more brilliant is Carmelo Anthony’s face after the play. Watch the zoom-in on Carmelo Anthony left speechless.

The most alarming thing about this season is that it seems as if the Knicks now think they are going to lose. There is a blatant lack of heart, commitment, and passion on this team. It was never more apparent than this past Thursday night, against the Miami Heat. The Knick players did not even hustle back on defense, and Lebron would use his energy to just blow past everyone for easy baskets. That is just insulting to fans who spent over $100 on tickets to see them play, and not to mention those fans, like me, who wasted their night sitting and watching them.

At this point all I could say is that Head Coach Mike Woodson needs to be fired. He is a defensive coach that is coaching one of the worst defenses in the NBA. The players are no longer committed and lack energy. The only thing that can cure this is a new coach bringing in his own new energy.

Being that the Eastern Conference is so bad, the Knicks actually still have a chance to sneak into the playoffs. The Knicks are just 6 games out of the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference. It would be tough to get in, but there is a chance. If they carry on like this, they are going to fall right out of it. They are 2-8 in their last 10 games.

They won 2 games in the month of February. That deserved its own paragraph. Let me repeat that.

Two games in the month of February.

They are going to look back and realize that they ruined their chance by sticking with what they had and hoping it would figure itself out. They need to make a change while they still can, or before they realize it, they’ll be officially done, with Carmelo Anthony looking to get as far as he can from New York, and the world’s most famous arena will struggle to put people in seats.
