Rounds 2 and 3 are now in the books for the 2014 NFL Draft.
It has been widely known that this draft class is the deepest one in a long time. Players taken in the 2nd and 3rd rounds and even ones that are still available, could have been 1st or 2nd rounders in another year’s draft.
This has everything to do with the fact that this draft saw the most underclassmen to ever apply in this history of the draft with 98.
Here is how the 2nd and 3rd rounds shaped up.

Winners
The Houston Texans did a great job of building a defensive line that will dominate for years to come. They got great value adding Louis Nix III in the middle of the 3rd round. This was a player that was looked at as a potential 1st round pick, and they stole him in the 3rd and put him on a defensive line with Jadeveon Clowney and J.J. Watt. Scary!
The Jacksonville Jaguars did a good job of adding major weapons for their new quarterback, Blake Bortles. They added Marquise Lee in the 2nd round who should have been a 1st round pick. Then they add Allen Robinson as well and come back with Brandon Linder for some offensive line protection. You can’t say the Jaguars didn’t provide enough for Bortles to win.
Despite having no 2nd round pick, the Minnesota Vikings did a nice job by adding Scott Crichton to their defensive line, a player I absolutely loved and saw as a 1st rounder, in the 3rd round. They also trade back into the 3rd round to add RB Jerick McKinnon, a raw, but intriguing, running back that will serve as a nice counter and backup to Adrian Peterson.
I must give the Dallas Cowboys some credit too. They trade up in the 2nd round, giving up their 3rd round pick, in order to find their DeMarcus Ware replacement in Demarcus Lawrence. Lawrence is an awesome player who’s always going 100 MPH and simply knows how to rush the passer. He is far from polished, but with Rod Marinelli in Dallas he should shape up very well. Dallas gets credit for changing their draft strategies of the past, which included taking the flashiest player with every pick so they can sell tickets and jerseys.
Last, but not least, the New England Patriots. I have been beating the Jimmy Garoppolo drum for a long, long, long, (did I say long?) time now. They draft their future successor to Tom Brady. Sorry Jet fans, you thought the misery would end soon after Brady? They couldn’t have found a better player to sit and learn until Brady retires. Garoppolo will be a future Pro Bowler. Remember I said that!
Losers
The Houston Texans. Oh wait! I called them a winner! I’ll explain. While they did a great job building a defensive line that has the potential to be the best in the league for a long time, they passed on quarterback twice. I’m sorry, but Ryan Fitzpatrick isn’t scaring anyone. Will teams even game plan against him? They can now focus on gameplanning against the defensive line, because I see no quarterback to worry about.
The Washington Redskins continue to show that they have no idea what they are doing on draft day. They trade back with Dallas to take LB Trent Murphy, a player who is undersized and seemed like he was strictly a college player, not to mention he could have been available in the 4th. Then they take Spencer Long with the pick they acquire from the Cowboys in the 3rd. I wonder if Long was even watching the draft. This guy had a good chance of being undrafted. I’m totally serious. Hey, but they did hit a home run with Morgan Moses in the beginning of the 3rd so I’ll give them a little credit, but those other 2 picks? Horrible.
When you take being cute to the level where you’re being too cute…that is the San Francisco 49ers. Keep trading around and getting nothing San Francisco! They take a running back in round 2 to add to a core that consists of Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, Lamichael James and Marcus Lattimore. Marcus Martin was a decent pick, but then after that they take Chris Borland to add to the league’s best linebacker core. I get that Navorro Bowman tore his ACL last season, but the 3rd round is not the time to take a guy that will fill in for a couple games. Then they take Brandon Thomas to end the 3rd round, a player who tore his ACL while preparing for the Draft. You will not see Thomas for the entirety of the 2014-15 season. Keep being cute San Fran.
