Hey Soccer…Get With The Times!

If you followed me last year, you know how excited I was for the World Cup. This is a major event that happens once every four years, that pins entire countries against each other in a tournament testing their soccer talents.

Something this major should not be handled so poorly.

I can’t even begin to explain how let down I was from this World Cup. Yes, the United States made me proud. I can’t complain about their play. What I can complain about is how poorly these games were refereed.

Soccer is a sport that people immediately associate with game fixing. This World Cup did nothing to diminish that reputation. I can’t even count the amount of questionable calls that were made during this World Cup. These weren’t calls that were small, but calls that changed entire games.

I am not one to complain about referees, but when you have an entire COUNTRY at stake, please do a good job of making sure these games leave no doubt in people’s minds.

In a world where every sport is starting to modernize and cut down on the amount of human error, soccer continues to live in the past. Maybe this is why Americans don’t care about the sport like they do various others. How is one person allowed to manage an entire field? Basketball puts three referees on a court that is a fraction of a soccer field. Yes, you have judges on the sides of the field, but come on…they can’t see these fouls going on.

Come on soccer. Get with the times! At least add a couple more referees on the field. At least let several minds converge on whether or not to make a call.

Two major calls come to mind immediately, Arjen Robben diving in the box earning a penalty that ended Mexico’s World Cup run and Luis Suarez biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini leading to a goal one minute later.

These are just ridiculous calls. Arjen Robben being tripped by a ghost should have been picked up by at least one other pair of eyes. The ref made a impulse decision and handed the game to the Netherlands.

Arjen Robben clearly is untouched, but earns a penalty shot eliminating Mexico from the World Cup

Giorgio Chiellini was clearly bitten by Luis Suarez, but the referee didn’t even look when he showed the teeth marks. Why not look?

How about replay, soccer?  This is a sport where one goal can result in a win. This goal is so hard to attain, but referees can pretty much give them away without replay or at least allowing someone else to see a different angle? If any sport needs more eyes and some technology it is this one.

Soccer, if you want to succeed in America…get with the times please…

Until then…I am more than happy with my football, basketball, baseball and hockey…where replay and multiple referees try to allow talent to earn wins instead of questionable penalties.

  1. Great article but I have a little to say about it. As a certified and practicing soccer referee myself, I definitely do not fault the referees for missing calls that may be “obvious” on television, or even to the fans. Controlling a game of 8 year old boys on a small field is difficult at times and controlling a game of 16 year olds is even more difficult…so I can’t imagine how hard it is to control a game of a bunch of grown men in an arena full of fans. There are a lot of things soccer referees have to look out for. Yes, certain calls are missed…but to get to this level of refereeing (on an international tournament level), you have to be somewhat competent.

That being said, I agree. Soccer needs to get with the times. Aside from being a referee, I also coach and play soccer…so you could say I’m slightly passionate about the sport. I think your suggestions for instant replay to be introduced….and other technological aspects like a goal censor in the ball to see if the whole ball crossed the line (a goal is only awarded if the whole ball crosses the line, which I’m sure you know) and stuff along those lines could be useful.

I’m lukewarm about the additional referees suggestion. Assistant referees mark the second to last defender already and are in charge of calling offside, faulty throw-ins, fouls near the touch lines…etc. And in my experience, one center referee is enough for the field if he/she runs the diagonal correctly.

But technology could definitely improve the game. I don’t know how to improve the refereeing situation (because the qualifications are already pretty strict for that level of refereeing) but I guess, the technology, in turn, could assist the referee. You know how many times in hockey a goal call made on the ice (and even if the blue light went on) has been reversed? Or how many times those guys in Toronto are watching stuff happening in Madison Square Garden to determine what the outcome should be? So yeah. Soccer needs to get with the times in that aspect. Definitely.
