It’s been in the works for a long time now, but it doesn’t seem real until there’s a trailer for it.
Star Wars Episode VII is very real now.
There isn’t very much to say considering it’s under 1:30 of footage and I am neither a huge Star Wars fan nor have been keeping up very well with the news on this. All I know is it renders the entirety of the franchise’s expanded universe non-canon, but that’s neither here nor there for the everyman. Regardless, it’s all very exciting–I can feel my fondness for this franchise growing–and here’s a few things to take away if you aren’t a big follower like I am.
Music
Very Star Wars (very ’80s) and it comes at no surprise.
Yes, that’s new John Williams score in #TheForceAwakens teaser.

Williams composed the score for all of the previous Star Wars films. Having him on board will definitely help sell the film as a true Star Wars installment and his music will make long strides in setting the landscape. Also, hearing the theme at the end is the definition of a rush.
New faces
Presumably the people were see are the leads of the film. It’s a trio, two men and one woman, in keeping with two previous trilogies. This time around it’s a Stormtrooper (assuming he’s not in disguise like Han and Luke were in The Empire Strikes Back), an X-wing pilot with the Rebel insignia clear on his helmet and suit, and a woman who reminds me strongly of both Padme and Leia. It looks like she’ll be meeting up with our Stormtrooper, and is that a lightsaber on her speeder? I’m not sure what connotations the Rebel insignia has now, since this film is set thirty years after Vader’s death.
Dark figure
The “Dark Side” awakening as mentioned in the voiceover, a Sith Lord as per popular speculation. Stumbling out into the forest, draws a lightsaber. Lightsaber is a design not seen yet in the films. Snazzy. Exactly how useful that crossguard will be and how it comes into play, if at all, remains to be seen.
We can’t see who this is, but my first thought is Gwendoline Christie? Is that you? She was cast into this film in an unspecified role earlier this year (along with Lupita Nyong’o, someone else to look forward to). This figure certainly fits Christie’s height and build. However, Adam Driver is said to be playing the film’s villain, so he’s probably a better choice to be guessing here too.
Ships
And what is a Star Wars film without the spaceships and battles featuring spaceships. Both the X-wings and the Millennium Falcon return to the screen. Seeing as Harrison Ford is returning to his role as Han Solo, the pilot of the Falcon (among other things), one has to wonder if he’s going to be piloting the ol’ lady.
It’s only a teaser trailer, so there isn’t very much to be looking at here, especially when you’re not much of a Star Wars geek like myself. But hearing that theme at the end of the trailer is enough to make me want to launch myself headfirst into the expanded material and it’s enough to suck nearly everyone else back into this space opera.
