QC Street Meat: Empanadas y Chorizo Por Favor!

Hello everyone! This is the second installment of QC Street Meat! Today I’m heading to the Colombian street cart on Melbourne and 150 St. right behind the Science Building.

This lovely little street cart is called Mi Pequeño Terruño #2 and is found there basically all day. This is one of my favorite carts because it offers great Colombian delectables that are otherwise pretty hard to find in this area, and right in our own backyard. They offer a wide variety of foods ranging from chorizo (sausages) to chicken and rice dishes. While I haven’t yet tried everything on the menu (I will I promise), my top favorites are these two amazing finger foods: empanadas and arepas rellenas.

Empanadas are a staple of Hispanic street carts. These crispy, flaky pastries are stuffed with different meats and possibly cheese and deep fried to perfection. DSC_0052

My favorite of the selection (chicken, beef, and cheese) is the chicken stuffed with potato. The chicken moist and lightly seasoned while the potato is also lightly salted and complements the chicken perfectly. The outside shell is always crispy and flaky without fail. Runner up in the empanada category is the cheese.

My next delicious selection is the arepa rellena. Arepas are flatbreads made from maize (corn) dough and stuffed with chicken, beef, or both.

The arepa is stuffed with whatever meat you choose with along with thousand island dressing and a sweet yellowish sauce which I cannot identify… but if I were to describe would be close to a very sweet honey mustard. It’s slightly tangy and quite sweet. The piece that brings it all together is the crushed up ruffles that add a lovely and light crunch to the top of the arepa. DSC_0075

It is the perfect blend of sweet and tangy meaty and it ends with a smooth and buttery maize flatbread.

So that’s it! If you’re looking to spend less than $10 for a bunch of little delicious foods, check out Mi Pequeño Terruño #2.
