Boxing’s Last Breath

These events used to be a major spectacle. There would be various major events and the same names would compete to hold their place within the sport.

I am referring to the sport of boxing. Remember that thing? A sport that has been practically dead for a long time, with two major names controlling everything dominating everyone they fought, will be revived for what could be the last time ever.

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather seem like boxing’s last breath. Two icons in the sport that for the majority of their career couldn’t get past the politics behind boxing to be able to fight each other will finally be put in the ring together.

Mayweather

As Pacquiao and Mayweather reach the final stages of their careers, we are still yet to find a young boxer with the excitement that people like those mentioned as well as the Muhammad Alis, Mike Tysons and George Foremans of the world garnered. This makes me worry. By this time we should be seeing someone steal some of the limelight from the two greats.

Last time I checked, front row seating for this major fight cost around $80,000. An unbelievable price for a couple hours of fighting. This speaks to the power of these fighters as well as the sport as a whole. Major fights definitely bring in a crowd, and with these prices, you can tell fights like this do not happen very often.

I cannot help but think about the movie Grudge Match when thinking about this situation. Pacquiao and Mayweather are approaching the end of their athletic careers. While it is exciting that we are finally getting to see these two fight, both are long past their prime. The only thing we will see in the near future will probably be a rematch between the two. Like Grudge Match, will we see these two have to fight when they reach their old age just to settle their beef and bring an audience to boxing?

The purse for this fight is estimated to be around $200 million which would be an obvious record. Mayweather would make around $120 million from this pot, with Pacquiao making the remaining value. The Pay-Per-View price for this is looking to be around $100 which would be another record. Pay-Per-View boxing matches typically cost around $50.

This proves how much pull boxing has. These prices are exorbitant and people will pay them. There is still a lot of power within this sport and this goes to show it. These prices are not likely to be topped within the near future, unless these two have a rematch. The long-time void in great boxing is largely responsible for the prices being so high. The supply has been extremely low with the demand being extremely high.

We will see a ton of media coverage for this fight as fight night approaches. Enjoy the process. This might be the last time we ever see something like this.
