If you’re a QC student reading this: Congratulations! You survived student government elections. Fortunately there were no casualties this year. But there are few, if any students, who left this week saying, “Wow. I really enjoyed exercising my right to vote this week!”
If you’re not a QC student or are just unaware of what went on, perhaps some of these anonymous posts can help you somewhat understand:
For some, it got personal.
The entire election seemed to be less about parties’ platforms and more about “voting against the bully.”
(The above post refers to a previously posted “secret” where the anonymous poster had alleged that an SFC member changed their votes on the laptop after they had logged in to vote. The allegations were never confirmed.)
Or just about voting for the less annoying party…
Some just appreciated the comedy of the situation…
…but most people were downright pissed off.
But the issue goes beyond voter harassment. In the true spirit of politics, slam campaigns and unrealistic promises made their appearance as well.
The two parties, SFC and IA, both posted videos used as evidence that the other party was “unfit to be elected.” IA’s video was of an SFC member acting, as they put it, “like a big bully.” In retaliation, SFC posted a video of an IA member throwing a water bottle at an SFC member in some sort of altercation. Both videos were permanently removed, but the usage of social media to slam the other party didn’t stop until the election was over.
There were some other legitimate concerns revolving around the election, such as allegations of misuse of the student government budget and of voter bribery.
Parties also made promises that couldn’t be kept:
Exhibit A: The promise of free printing, which was a failed experiment last semester (promised by IA).
Exhibit B: The promise to provide need-based scholarships, something that the student government doesn’t have the budget for or control over (promised by both IA and SFC).
Exhibit C: Promises to provide things like better wifi, charging stations, and microwaves…while simultaneously keeping the same activities that we know and love…but also doing so while not increasing our student fees. Which honestly seems unfeasible.
It’s almost like they’re real politicians.
The good news is that no matter how political our favorite anonymous secret page gets, it’ll always be the same old QC Secrets…
