Feel the Bern on Hillary

Even though I’m in Italy, I feel obligated, as a Political Science major, to talk a little bit about what’s going on in the American political realm.

The two democratic front runners, as you may know, are Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. Personally, I have no idea which one to vote for quite yet. Bernie Sanders has held certain beliefs throughout his time in office since he started. He doesn’t flip-flop like Hillary in order to gain the popular vote. However, Bernie has also openly labeled himself as a ‘democratic-socialist’ and in our country, saying socialist scares A LOT of people. It’s like yelling: WE WILL BE THE SOVIET UNION, when all Bernie means is that he hates that capitalism throws some people under the bus, while giving others priority seating.

So what does Bernie stand for?

  • On Income and Wealth Inequality: “America now has more wealth and income inequality than any major developed country on earth, and the gap between the very rich and everyone else is wider than at any time since the 1920s.”
  • On College Tuition and Debt: He plans to “make tuition free at public colleges and universities […] stop the federal government from making a profit on student loans […] substantially cut student loan interest rates […] allow Americans to refinance student loans at today’s low interest rates […] allow students to use need-based financial aid and work study programs to make college debt free [and] fully paid for by imposing a tax on Wall Street speculators.” Basically, Bernie blames Wall Street for a lot of our country’s economic problems.
  • On Climate Change: He has already taken action in Vermont as a senator (i.e. introducing the gold standard for climate change legislation to tax carbon and methane emissions) and would continue to do so as president.
  • On Immigration Policy: He plans to incorporate “fair and humane immigration policy.”

  • On Racial Justice: “We must pursue policies that transform this country into a nation that affirms the value of its people of color. That starts with addressing the four central types of violence waged against black and brown Americans: physical, political, legal and economic.”
  • On Reforming Wall Street: Big corporations “have acquired too much economic and political power, endangering our economy and our political process.”
    • He has proposed a financial transaction tax which will reduce risky involvement in Wall Street, preventing economic crashes; proceeds would be used to provide debt-free public college education.
