Welcome to the new school year! The new fall semester means that summer vacation is officially over and that there is an entirely new, busy, stressful, and overwhelming semester we need to endure. That’s what it means for me at least.
It’s understandable that the new semester = end of summer, but why does Labor Day also mean the official end of summer? Who made up the rule that makes everyone believe they can’t wear white anymore? If you’re like me and have a bunch of white fall/winter sweaters you feel weird about wearing but also don’t really care, let’s not care together. You can wear white, and it’s going to be okay!
Summer is not officially over yet, people! Especially if you indulge in summer treats that bring you back to sitting on the beach rather than sitting in a cold, over air-conditioned computer lab.
Today we’re going to talk about this great ice cream shop in Flushing, Queens. It’s called 10Below Ice Cream, located at 136-17 39th Ave, and it serves up one of the latest trends in ice cream: rolled ice cream.
Rolled ice cream is a common street food in Thailand. According to their website, each ice cream is made fresh to order under two minutes, right in front of your eyes.
10Below Ice Cream is kind of hidden, it’s in the basement of a mall. So you have to dig a bit for it, but it’s worth it!
During summer months the line for 10Below can be insane, ranging from 30 minutes to more than an hour. The line can wrap around the entire basement! Patience is virtue, my friends.
But once it’s finally your turn, the fun begins. First you pick your flavor. The flavors are really interesting, and 10Below tries to incorporate traditional Asian flavors along side American favorites.
They have flavors like “Monkey Business,” which is nutella and banana, “Strawberry Shawty,” which is strawberry and graham crackers, and “Ain’t Got No Thai Fo Dat,” which is a Thai ice tea flavor. I got “Cookie Monster,” which is a cookies and cream flavor (my favorite).
After you order, they send you to one of the few workstations where you can watch them assemble your ice cream. Each workstation is a big, cold, circle metal container where they spill in your liquid ice cream and other ingredients. In the “Cookie Monster,” they add whole Oreos.
Since the plate is cold the liquid begins to freeze, creating ice cream. Once it begins to thicken, they begin to mush in your ingredients and create the flavored ice cream.
Then once everything is mixed in and once it’s thick enough, they spread the ice cream into a very thin sheet on the cold plate, evenly.
Aaaaand last but not least once it is a thin layer they begin to roll your ice cream into perfect little rolls! Ignore the Flushing snapchat geotag (I’m addicted to snapchat and can’t stop).
After it is all rolled up, you can then choose your toppings. The cool thing about 10Below is that there is unlimited toppings for no extra cost! You can get anything from pretzels, granola, chocolate syrup, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, Oreos, Nilla wafers, coconut flakes, honey and condensed milk. You can also add marshmallows and they roast them a bit for you! And this is your end result:
For just $7 you get all of this, plus a show! Come check out 10Below Ice Cream in Flushing for not only a cool twist on ice cream, but for a taste of summer any time of the year!
