America Was Never Great

I find the phrase “Make America Great Again” quite amusing, simply because it’s self-contradictory and ironic. The phrase “Make America Great Again” baffles and confuses me. ‘Again’?

Are some of us unaware of America’s history? We are the only nation to have dropped an atomic bomb, which wiped out two cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki with a death toll of over 300,000 individuals. The consequences of which still carry on, that people residing in those two cities, or near there, are still born with birth defects and rare diseases due to radiation. America openly and proudly participated in the African Holocaust which killed millions of African Americans in the slave trade. We carved out the words “All men are created equal” on the constitution and then turned our back to treat Black people with inhumane conditions through segregation and Jim Crow laws. We pointed fingers at Germany for its concentration camps, and then incarcerated over 100,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. We threw stones at Ruby Nell Bridges and terrorized her for being the first black child to attend an all white school.  We criminalized abortion up until 1970, regardless if the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest, or was dangerous to the mother. We condoned poor working conditions, low wages, and poverty.

What America DOES rank number one in is the number of individuals who are incarcerated; and military spending where we spend twice as much as the next hundred countries combined.

America ranks fourteenth in education, nineteenth in national satisfaction, FOURTY FOURTH in health care efficiency, sixty sixth in religious diversity, and a striking HUNDRED AND ONE in peace.

Don’t get me wrong, I am American. This is my home, and I love that I was introduced to different cultures and diverse individuals growing up in New York. But… nationalism shouldn’t blind you. The only way for America to be great, or the greatest nation is when we start calling each other out on our bullshit; when we start calling out our state and federal officials, congress and media out for racism, and bigotry. We need to accept the mistakes we have made in the past. WE HAVE TO acknowledge the faults that exist in our society, judicial system and legal policies.

Please. Let’s Make America Great.
