Fries are a pretty common guilty pleasure. Well, they are for me, at least. I constantly crave them and I can never have just one. They’re my weakness. My Achilles heel. I even like the fries from McDonald’s, and I don’t particularly like McDonald’s.
Not only are french fries my kryptonite, but also speciality fries. Speciality fries are appetizers or sides that are piled high with toppings, or are just a unique version of fries.
Here are some of my favorite speciality fries around Queens:
Loaded Joju Bánh Mì Fries
Joju: located at 83-25 Broadway, Elmhurst, NY 11373.
I talked about this Vietnamese sandwich shop in my post about Elmhurst, but we’re going to specifically talk about these fries in this post.
The Loaded Joju Bánh Mì Fries. I literally sit and hum while eating these fries. First off, these specialty fries are beautiful. Look how pretty! There are tons of colors.

They are fries topped with a special house sauce, mild spicy mayo, spicy green sauce, pickled daikon (radishes) carrots, jalapeños, chopped cilantro and a runny fried egg. You can add on a meat, so I added on bulgogi beef for $2.00 extra. Bulgogi beef is thinly sliced Korean-style ribeye.
Once you pop open the egg and let the yolk run through, you’re good to go. These fries make me so happy. 10 out of 10. Can you believe under all of that goodness there are crispy, fresh fries?! I salivate just thinking about them.
A large is $5.99 without the meat. $7.99 with the meat. Go for the bulgogi!
Poutine with Truffle Fries
Forest Hills Station House: located at 106-11 71st Ave, Forest Hills, NY 11375.
Poutine is a traditional Canadian dish, originating in Quebec, made with french fries, cheese curds and gravy. They sell poutine at McDonald’s in Canada!
The Poutine at the Station House is SO addicting I think about it all of the time.
Station House reminds me of great, loud music (of the Mumford and Sons genre), whiskey and beer. The whole bar is pretty young, as well– one could say that this is where “hipsters” go in Forest Hills.
The first time I ordered the poutine I was with my friend Brittany.
This poutine is made with hand-cut fries, brown gravy and cheddar cheese curds. We were just going to order it with regular fries. But our waiter, Nate, suggested that we get it with truffle fries instead, and claimed that they were so much better. We listened, and ordered the truffle fries. The difference was that these fries were made with truffle oil.
When they were brought to us, we were taken aback by the size. It was a huge, tall plate. Not stingy at all. It was really hot, too. Once we dug in we discovered the gooey, salty and creamy perfection. Our lives have changed ever since. You could pull the cheese and it would go on forever. The gravy was perfectly seasoned, not too salty not too sweet. This dish is the definition of flawless.
The regular poutine is $11.00 and is $14.00 with truffle fries. Do the truffle fries!
F. Ottomanelli Belgian Fries
F. Ottomanelli Burgers & Belgian Fries: located at 60-15 Woodside Ave, Woodside, NY 11377.
This place has the most authentic Belgian fries I’ve had in a long time. The cool part about these fries is the dipping sauces you can order on the side.

I got the spicy barbecue, which was quite spicy but delicious. Super smokey. They have a homemade white truffle dipping sauce, which is unbelievable. What I’ve noticed is that truffles are a good pairing with fries. So good. Other unique dipping sauces include bacon ranch, wasabi ginger, roasted garlic and rosemary parmesan. They also have your usual honey mustard, chipotle and melted cheese. You can also put malt vinegar on your fries, which is a cool touch. Each order of fries comes in a cute metal cone.
A regular order of Belgian fries is $3.00 and a large is $4.00. Each sauce is $0.59 extra. So worth it, though!
Deep Fried Popcorn Okra
Sugar Freak: located at 36-18 30th Ave, Astoria, NY 11103.
This place is a Cajun/Creole paradise right in Astoria. It’s so unique and unusual to this area. I’d like to think that their Deep Fried Popcorn Okra is kind of like the speciality fries of Louisiana!
I haven’t had much experience with okra. I have only had it once in my life when my friend from high school’s Guyanese mother made traditional okra, which was so good. I don’t even remember what was in it or how it was prepared, all I know is that I couldn’t get enough of it.

The preparation for the fried okra at Sugar Freak seems relatively simple, served with a chipotle mayo. The inside was not as crispy as the outside, kind of like how a french fry isn’t as crispy on the inside as it is on the outside.
And it’s served in a cute fry basket! So poppable and easy to eat. And of course, delicious. They’re so different, it’s kind of indescribable.
An order of Deep Fried Popcorn Okra is $7.00. Come to Sugar Freak and try it out!
