How many have you have ever written a paper on a Debussy Cello Sonata?
…I didn’t think so.
My life is becoming increasingly difficult to balance out. The stack of music that I need to learn stands about thigh-high. I’ve started listing out my deadlines for graduate school auditions: pre-screening cds and applications due December 1st. Then there’s Theory class, music history, choir, and the opera (Puccini’s opera Suor Angelica will be performed in LeFrak Hall on November 18th and 19th). Add on French class and Math class. Multiply by work and gigs. Divide by sanity. Equals me.
For those of you who weren’t sure, being a singer is NOT easy. Not even a little bit. I feel like I’ve rarely had a second to think lately. If there’s one thing I want to stress it’s that being an opera singer has got to be one of the hardest things in the world to be…and if it wasn’t something I passionately love with all my heart, I wouldn’t be going through this.
So next time you run into an opera singer (or any music major, for that matter), give them a really big hug.
So far, for my Debussy cello sonata paper, I have
“Debussy wrote a sonata. It is for cello.”
Always,
Nicholle B.
