Well, leave it to Hurricane Sandy to put me behind my blog updates again. Still, you can’t blame a girl for losing track of deadlines when she’s too busy staring wide-eyed out her window at Sandy’s fury and wondering if it’s too late to duct-tape her rattling door.
That being said, I am glad to have gotten through yet another hurricane (two in two years, how’s that for the record books, NY?) Looking out my window, I know that the jumble of tree branches and a misplaced garbage can is nothing compared to what other parts of NY are dealing with right now, which just adds to the blessings I am counting for not being on the extreme receiving end of Sandy.
Maybe it’s because this wasn’t my first encounter with a hurricane (remember Hurricane Charlie in Florida oh so many years ago? Guess who was huddled up in a hotel room back then because her vacation to Universal Studios was cut short. Talk about ending the vacation with a bang), but I was more awed than terrified this time around hearing the roaring winds and watching my balcony door shake violently. I spent most of the time with Sandy texting my friends to stay in contact, especially a couple of them who lived in Long Island and had their power cut hours before, as well as watching coverage of Sandy’s path on TV. Like I mentioned before, I’m definitely counting my blessings that my power didn’t get cut. It was definitely touch and go for a while there though with the lights flickering on and off.
The worst is definitely behind us now. From the subways flooded like a scene taken out of Titanic to the pitch-black Manhattan skyline, it’s mind-boggling to see the kind of damage Mother Nature can inflict. I don’t know about you, but in my opinion, three days off from school pales in comparison to the fires, surging floodwaters, and toxic stew now mixing with the waterways. In the end, all I have left to say is that I hope everyone is safe now that Sandy’s passed. Let this be a lesson learned to everyone and anyone wanting to mess with Mother Nature. Epic storms like Sandy are only the beginning.
