NFL Combine Winners

This past weekend saw the majority of players entering into the 2015 NFL Draft showcasing their skill and athleticism. This is a place where players can show how they have improved their body and skill in the time between the end of the season and now. There were a couple players who really impressed.

You just can’t start anywhere else but with Byron Jones, the cornerback out of UConn.  Jones recorded a 12 foot 3 inch broad jump, a number that shatters the Combine record and may even be a world record. Numbers don’t do it justice. Watch it and be amazed.

Jones improved on his already intriguing name, but what I look for in the Combine is to see players improve on their downsides. One guy who did this was Vic Beasley. One of the knocks on Beasley was his size. He was considered too slim to play with power off the edge in a 4-3 and possibly in a 3-4. Beasley weighed in at 246 pounds, gaining 15 pounds since the end of the season. With that drastic of a weight gain you would expect to see a decline in his athleticism. Beasley still impressed in that department as well. He clocked in at 4.53 in his 40 yard dash and showed the kind of athleticism scouts became accustomed to. Beasley went from being a player that was looked at as a top 25 talent to someone who is now top 10 and maybe even top 5.

One of the biggest storylines leading up to this draft is the debate between the top 3 elite wide receivers in this class. Amari Cooper, Kevin White and Devante Parker are all considered elite talents at the position. Kevin White really caught my eye at the Combine. Last year, a player named Odell Beckham Jr. caught my eye at the combine making it look effortless the way he caught the football and moved around. This year Kevin White did the same. White has the build you want for a wide receiver. He is tall, wide, and very strong. I did not expect to see sprinter speed out of him, but he ran a 4.35 40 yard dash. This was a player who was projected to run a high 4.5 to low 4.6. White is the total package at wide receiver and should make an instant impact at the next level.

Trae Waynes slammed the door on all debate about who is the top cornerback in this class. The only question I had about Waynes was whether or not he could hold up against speedy receivers. Waynes absolutely shattered that doubt by running a 4.31 40 yard dash. Waynes is a shut down corner that has proven to be someone you can’t just beat deep. I cannot see a way in which Waynes makes it past the New Orleans Saints at 13th overall and I think this could be a very serious option for the New York Jets at 6th overall.

Last but not least, Jameis Winston solidified himself at the best quarterback in this class, and someone who is very deserving of the 1st overall pick. If you took away the off-the-field incidents from Winston, I think people would be talking about him as one of the bigger quarterback prospects to hit the NFL in a while. The off-the-field concerns are minimal in my opinion. This is a young kid who has a goody side to himself. When being interviewed he welcomed the spotlight. He cracked jokes and showed that he is not scared of the moment one bit. He is an intelligent quarterback as he reportedly aced all of his interviews and showed his knowledge when taking to the white board. On the field at the Combine Winston showed his competitive nature yelling at the wide receivers trying to motivate them and get the most out of them. Mostly, Winston had fun and showed his love for the game while making every throw that you can ask for. Here is a look into the mind of Jameis Winston.
