Welcome back to the new semester!
I’m going to try something a little different in this post. A lot of my favorite topics to write about have come from people asking me questions about math.
So, here goes: what questions do you have about math? What concept have you sort of learned but never really understood? What idea bothers you philosophically? What technique do you wish you knew how to do? What idea do you feel you know, but when you think about it, it seems fuzzy?
Do you want to know what calculus is for? How to read summation notation? When it’s okay to use calculators? What “dimension” means?
Ask me your questions! I’ll try to address them in future posts.

I love this idea too. Did you read the article in the Times this week about teaching math to adults? It was about a program run at QC by Andrew Hacker. Do you know him? I’ve never been a confident math student due to what I later in life realized was minor numerical dyslexia. I always felt stupid when I had to memorize, especially times tables, which were incredibly hard for me. I liked the conceptual element of math but felt too scared to take the risks required to really learn it well. Even today, I hate having to do math in my head. I don’t really have a specific question, but I’d love to discuss the program with you (you may already know about it). If not, you can read the Times article here:
